OTL101 Post 3

I have been hired to supervise students in their practicum placement for the Addictions and Mental Health program, however, the courses are still being developed and are not yet offered.  I taught Addictions and Mental Health courses at another educational setting and supervised students in their practicum there, so I will base my responses on the practicum that this school offers.

  1. What are the intended learning outcomes of the course? Do the learning outcomes reflect high-level cognitive skills or low-level skills (pay attention to the verbs)?

The web description offered for this course only includes the following:

“This course offers students the opportunity to integrate and practice knowledge and skills to assist individuals in mental health and addiction settings. Emphasis will be on developing self as a reflective practitioner within and interprofessional team.”

I would say that based on the above, in order to meet the course objectives and learning outcomes, student would need to implement high-level cognitive skills as it is about integration and practicing knowledge and skills.

2.  How is student learning assessed in the course (essays, quizzes, journals, machine-gradable tests, portfolios)?

Student learning was assessed through reflective journals, blog postings, and practicum placement supervised evaluations)

3. In what ways are the intended learning outcomes and the assessments aligned or not?

They are aligned because it requires the students to integrate, practice, and show the knowledge and skills they have learned through the course.
